I Don’t Want to be A Clone
![]()
With all the discussion going on about stem cell research and cloning, I was just wondering what it would be like if we could listen in on the thoughts of a batch of zygotes (first cells of a new organism). There they are just sitting around in a petrie dish, waiting for whatever comes next:
One zygote says: “I’m going to be very important in the scientific community. I’m participating in a research project to cure cancer.”
Another zygote says: “That’s nothing, I’m going to be grown into the most perfect specimen of a perfect human being, and scientists from all over the world will study me.”
One zygote sits in the corner (is there a corner in a petrie dish?) and seems very unhappy. “What’s your problem?”, one of the first zygotes asks. The unhappy one says “I don’t want to be a clone.”
“Nobody said you had to be a clown, you can be whatever you want to be ~ I’m going to be perfect!”
“Not a clown stupid, a clone; an exact genetic replica of someone who is already a grown up human being.”
“Why don’t you want to be a clone? I think it’s cool.”
“Because I want to be unique in the universe, just like all those humans who have existed before us. I want to be my own person ~ not a copy.”
Suddenly the whole dish erupts with wiggling, screaming zygotes: “We don’t want to be clones! We don’t want to be clones!”
A voice comes from above (not God, but a scientist who thinks he is God): “There must be something wrong with this batch. Dump them down the garbage chute and let’s start all over.”
It’s coming people ~ believe it or not!
